GAF has become the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. They have achieved this feat through the stringent standards they hold for their products and their authorized contractors. I think my roof needs to be replaced, what should I be looking for?
The weather in Missouri and Minnesota can be tough on any roof, and certain signs indicate a serious problem.
Some of those warning signs may include:
- Shingle Edges Are Curled or Cupped
- Bald Spots Where Granules Are Missing
- Cracked Shingles
- Missing Shingles
Additional Factors to Consider
Your roof is at least 10 to 15 years old. While many roofing materials today are designed to last 20, 30, or more years, that wasn't the case as recently as 10 or 15 years ago. When you couple that with the storms we get here in Missouri and Minnesota, older roofs are lucky to make it 7 to 10 years at the most.
Your neighbors are getting new roofs. Most homes in a given neighborhood were probably built around the same time. This is especially true if you live in a PUD (planned urban development community). So, if you see your neighbors getting a new roof, you might want to consider checking yours.
The roof just looks old and worn. Sometimes, it's pretty easy to spot a roof that needs to be replaced. This is especially true with some of your older asphalt shingles that were built years ago and did not have the benefit of today’s modern technology. Newer asphalt shingles are better protected against the sun's harmful UV rays and do not fade as fast – if at all – unlike older shingles. If your roof looks “faded” it might be approaching the end of its useful life.
Moss is gathering. Moss can grow on just about any surface that doesn’t get much sunlight – even more so in cool, moist climates. Unfortunately for homeowners, moss growth can be more than just a simple cosmetic issue. Moss loves to grow on roofs. Once mold invades your roof, it will hold moisture against the roof surface. Overtime – in the freezing climates of St. Paul and St. Charles – this will cause damage to your shingles.
Most homeowners will break out a ladder and brush off the moss, which is a bad idea. Brush off the moss and you might be brushing off the granules and damaging the shingle surface. We highly recommend you contact us if you have moss on your roof.
I was inspecting my roof, and I have these weird dark streaks – what’s wrong?
It’s algae, and it’s nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, some roofing companies in operating in the Twin Cities may use this as a way to force you into replacing the entire roof. You can easily remove the algae with a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water. Make sure you use a low volume/low pressure hose to spray the solution, so as not to spray off the shingle protective granules. Also, make sure to protect your landscaping, as bleach will kill your plants. However, if you think your algae problem is too challenging, it could be an indicator of a bigger problem. If you have any doubt at all, call us.
Roofing companies like to talk about their great warranties – but what’s the real difference?
A number of roofing companies have what is known as the “taillights warranty.” That is, the job is guaranteed until you see the contractor’s taillights as he drives away. If you experience a problem after that, you will almost always get the phone-tag runaround. Our group provides you with an alternative. We have one of the strongest warranties in the industry, and we are leaving the competition behind.
How can we offer these warranties? This is possible because our processes are so thorough, our workmanship is so meticulous, and our installation is so precise. Simply stated—we don’t mess up, so we’re not afraid to back up our work.
And With Our IKO- and GAF-approved materials, you get a lifetime warranty that is backed by our customer for life promise. If you discover a problem with your new roof, we fix it. There are no exceptions, no fine print, and no exclusions to this assurance. Do not settle for less when choosing a roofing group and a siding repair service for your home. Ask any competitor for a promise, in writing, that they will match our warranties. If they fail to back up their work, just keep looking. The problems you a sure to face are just not worth your time and money.
